In The Know with Wilson Lee

FILL US IN ON YOUR BACKGROUND, WHO YOU ARE, WHAT YOU DO?

I’m a Hong Kong based architectural and interior designer for more than 13 years. I’m also previously a musician and always in love with photography. I co-founded WALL Studio few years ago and had a wonderful journey with interesting projects. And now I have co-founded a new design studio ADJECTIVE, which further focus on designs which can connect with people and community. I started teaching part-time at design school this year, which is one of the biggest challenges for me recently!

WHERE DO YOU GO FOR YOUR CHEAP EATS, COMFORT FOOD?

Ngau Kee is my first choice since I know them when they’re still in Gough Street. They got friendly staff, easy and delicious food. Now they have moved to Chai Wan. And we love sashimi, so Pololi is also our pick. New York Club in Tai Hang, when we want to be extremely causal especially after long working hours…

HOW ABOUT FOR A NICE DINNER AND A NIGHT OUT?

A nice dinner is always completed with good friends. So it can be everywhere. If we are looking for a destination, Stack is one of the choices. Nice food with a cozy environment situated in Sai Wan. (And we did the interior!) For drinks, I will pick Cafe Gray Deluxe at the Upper House or Ping Pong 129 Gintonería and Enmaru Izakaya for some delicious charcoal-grilled fish.

ON WEEKENDS, WHERE DO YOU GO TO LEAVE BEHIND THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE OF THE CITY?

I love running. There’s a good trail next to my apartment for me to jog along the shoreline and free my mind. Sometimes Discovery Bay is also a nice choice to escape from the crowd. For an urban retreat, I will go back to my studio’s neighborhood – NOHO. Because here we got good coffee, interesting lanes and shops to spend the day.

WHERE DO YOU SHOP? ANY SECRET FINDS THAT YOU CAN LET OUR GUESTS IN ON?

For music lovers, White Noise Records in Prince Edward is a great choice for exploration when you are getting bored with popular music. For design items, check out Gough Street in Central. There’re many independent stores selling all kinds of design products and gadgets.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR ENTERTAINMENT? ANY GREAT ART, MUSIC, THEATRE OR CINEMA VENUES YOU WOULD RECOMMEND?

There’re too many entertainments and noise in Hong Kong. We love to dig into secret places, which is still not well-known by the public to keep a little bit of sense of privilege. Visage One at Hollywood Road is a rare gem in Hong Kong. In daytime, it is a hair salon. But at Saturday nights, it will convert into an intimate jazz and blues bar. For tourists, check out Sunbeam Theatre in North Point for some traditional Chinese drama plays.

WHAT’S THE BEST SOUVENIR TO BRING BACK FROM HONG KONG?

Umbrellas, and Made in Hong Kong.

ACT LOCAL – WHERE, WHEN AND HOW?

It’s easy here. Hong Kong is a multi-cultural, convenient and safe city. Bring a tote, a phone with built-in camera if you like and walk on the street. (Walk fast, and don’t be too polite…) Avoid “official” tourist spots, and you are one of the locals!
