In The Hood
Central

If we’re talking business, start-ups and the #HongKongHustle, we have to bring this issue’s In the Hood series to Central. From the edge of outlying island piers to the top of Soho, Central is constantly buzzing with Hong Kong people at work.

Our favourite places to explore, shop and eat in Central are…

EXPLORE

PMQ has been the talk of the town for a while but it’s not hard to see why.  Built in 1951 as the Police Married Quarters, this site not only offers an abundance of creative goods and great restaurants, it features hints of life before the revitalization of the area. Even if you’re not in the mood to spend a little something for yourself, don’t miss the chance to walk along the elevated corridors, do a little window shopping or even look across the open space and imagine what you might have yelled to your neighbours back in the day.

PMQ truly is a creative and entrepreneurial hot spot. Founded on the ideals of promoting and nurturing local designers, artists and creative-minded individuals alike, it offers an endless selection of goods ranging from specialty paint stores, independent galleries, environmentally conscious homeware products, and more. Many of these shops host additional workshops or events to encourage the public to participate in Hong Kong’s creative community. If this hasn’t proved to be the place to inspire and nurture creative entrepreneurs, perhaps the fact that they have onsite an IoT Accelerator hub might convince you.

SHOP

Staying true to their humble beginnings, Flowbooks is a second-hand book store that has been running for 17 years and counting. The shop has had the same business model for the past decade and has proved to be a quiet success. The more you give, the more you will receive – in the form of new things to read, listen or watch! If you rummage through the stacks and stacks of books and CDs you are bound to find something interesting. It could be an out of print book, a rare CD, or even an old-school manual for something that doesn’t exist anymore. If you don’t know what to do with your old books, we say, take them to Flow Books and fall in love all over again with something new (even if it’s old).

TASTE

While there are literally hundreds of mouth-watering, belly-filling foods to indulge in Central – we’re giving it up to the new Korean eatery Seoul Bros. Their unmistakable neon sign on Hollywood Road draws attention to their contemporary and sleek aesthetic. The restaurant is unpretentious, modern, and best of all, serves incredibly flavourful food. In their own words: “Through our offering, we would like to show that there is much more variety to Korean food and culture than barbecued meat and K-Pop.”

The Korean influenced menu serves classic Korean flavours with global food items like Kimchi fries or the Seoul Bros Quesadilla, there are even veggie options like the saucy Tofu SB Banh Mi for all the vegetarians out there who want to give this place a taste. This new joint will not disappoint, it is great value for money and will leave you coming back for more.

Pro tip: do NOT share the kimchi fries (you will need them all)
