In The Know with Paul Lee

FILL US IN ON YOUR BACKGROUND, WHO YOU ARE, WHAT YOU DO?

I was born and raised in HK and went to college in the US, then worked for Silicon Valley startups before coming back home in 2007. Today I run Aumeo Audio, a HK startup that invented the world’s first tailored audio technology that reshapes audio based on each person’s individual hearing – kind of like glasses for your ears.

WHERE DO YOU GO FOR YOUR CHEAP EATS, COMFORT FOOD?

I LOOOOVE local junk foods. Spicy fish ball is my favorite, and I always stop at 通達食店 (‘Tung Tat Food Shop’) on Pitt Street for the spicy fish balls (right next to Tribute!). Now you are getting me hungry.

HOW ABOUT FOR A NICE DINNER AND A NIGHT OUT?

Well as an entrepreneur I don’t go out much. I do have fond memories dining with my wife at recently 208 Duecento Otto. As an added benefit, it’s walking distance to PMQ, the “SoHo-like” artsy place with interesting events all the time.

ON WEEKENDS, WHERE DO YOU GO TO LEAVE BEHIND THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE OF THE CITY?

The beach! Stanley if you are into hustling and bustling or Shek O if you enjoy more of a pristine beach. Stanley is cool because you can also hike there through the Tai Tam Country Park.

WHERE DO YOU SHOP? ANY SECRET FINDS THAT YOU CAN LET OUR GUESTS IN ON?

Depends on what you like! I don’t shop much except for audio and other gadgets. I’d recommend walking around Mong Kok or go to One Duddell Street for high-end audio gear shops. Honestly I just window-shop but even that is interesting in and of itself!

Also check out Temple Street, walking distance from Tribute. Not so much a shopping experience as it is a cultural experience.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR ENTERTAINMENT? ANY GREAT ART, MUSIC, THEATRE OR CINEMA VENUES YOU WOULD RECOMMEND?

WHAT’S THE BEST SOUVENIR TO BRING BACK FROM HONG KONG?

<shameless-plug>I would say get an Aumeo device! It’s not on-sale till December and it’s already half sold. We meant to launch it globally but we may now only have enough to sell in Hong Kong!</shameless-plug>

ACT LOCAL – WHERE, WHEN AND HOW?

We as a family help a local housing estate’s elderly center every month to distribute rice and other foods to elderlies living on their own. I don’t know if it is suitable for foreigners because they only speak Cantonese, but it’s a great thing to do and hopefully it helps shape our kids’ personalities.
