In The Hood
North Point

North Point, located in the northeastern part of Hong Kong, is an unassuming area – seemingly a sleepy residential neighbourhood with a mix of luxury developments and older buildings all mixed up in one area. Dig a little deeper with us and you’ll find out it’s worth exploring this district – with it’s tram-crossing markets, market-hidden restaurants, and community-integrated art space.

EXPLORE

Located at 12 Oil Street, and housed in the former Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, Oi! Art Space has adopted the Cantonese homonym of the address for its Chinese name. ‘12’ is also a homonym for ‘realise’ in Cantonese. It is platform that allows local young artists to interact with each other and connect with the community through various exhibitions and art projects.

BONUS: Visit Xchange: Social Gastronomy  inside the Oi! Art Space. You are welcome to bring along any fresh ingredients, canned and packaged food, secret recipes or even your own stories in exchange for a signature drink from the Kit-Chen. Enjoy the drink, and the chill-out time in the oasis of the concrete jungle.

SHOP

Chun Yeung Street Market is where the tram track is flanked by the wet market with vegetable stalls, meat vendors, and temporary hawker stalls. You can also find Fujian stores in that area as North Point has a small Fujian community. It’s definitely a sight to see – a tram running through the market every few minutes yet stall vendors and customers alike barely pause for a second and continue on with whatever it is they’re doing.

TASTE

A “Dai Pai Dong” (name for the local street restaurant) is one of the must-tries in Hong Kong as the rich flavours of the dishes produced by the sizzling hot wok (called ‘WOK HEI’) can only be found in a Dai Pai Dong. While the most traditional kind is usually based on the streets, Tung Po Restaruant is tucked away inside the 2/F of North Point Market and serves one of the best salted chill prawns, deep-fried tofu, squid ink pasta, crispy garlic chicken, and barbecued eel. Beer is served well-chilled together with porcelain bowls, to be downed in a heroic style.
