In The Know with Sean Lee Davies

FILL US IN ON YOUR BACKGROUND, WHO YOU ARE, WHAT YOU DO?

I’m a fine art photographer, TV host, director/exec producer and conservationist. I run my own production house called Activis Media that produces high-end, premium content across multiple digital platforms for luxury brand clients and broadcasters. I’ve written, directed, produced and hosted feature documentaries and TV shows for the likes of National Geographic and Channel News Asia.  Using my media background, I have set up a non-profit organization called Project C:Change, an environmental initiative that aims to raise awareness about the issues of climate change and illegal poaching.

WHERE DO YOU GO FOR YOUR CHEAP EATS, COMFORT FOOD?

I’ll go to a dai pai dong in Causeway Bay for congee or a wonton noodles. Very quick and comforting and still quite cheap!

HOW ABOUT FOR A NICE DINNER AND A NIGHT OUT?

Zuma is still one of the best places for a night out. For something a bit more charming I’ll head to Carbone and end up for a whisky at Stockton’s.

ON WEEKENDS, WHERE DO YOU GO TO LEAVE BEHIND THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE OF THE CITY?

Hong Kong is blessed by having so many hiking trails. I really couldn’t imagine living here without the mountains and the sea. I’ll head to Tai Tam Reservoir Park and hike down to either Stanley or Shek O for an evening meal. Or I’ll head out on the boat at Deep Water Bay and sail out to the Po Toi Island for a seafood lunch and then sail back via Lamma.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR ENTERTAINMENT? ANY GREAT ART, MUSIC, THEATRE OR CINEMA VENUES YOU WOULD RECOMMEND?

Cantonese opera has seen a resurgence in popularity over the past few years. While I’m not necessarily a huge fan of the art, going to watch it in at Yau Ma Tei theatre is an enthralling cultural experience. Even better is going backstage watching the actors apply their intricate makeup and switch the elaborate outfits.

There are plenty of great art galleries now in HK, especially with all the investment by international names such as White Cube and Gagosian and the soon to be opened ex Central Police headquarters and M+. It’s definitely worth an art walk about Hollywood road, Pedder building where you might see one of the great masters.

The bird market in Yuen Po Street is a fascinating spot to visit. Every morning owners ‘walk’ their birds and sing to them, it’s a serene spot in another otherwise frenzied city.

WHAT’S THE BEST SOUVENIR TO BRING BACK FROM HONG KONG?

For a guy, definitely tailored suit with a mandarin collar from one of the many tailors in Tsim  Sha Tsui as Sam’s Tailors.

ACT LOCAL – WHERE, WHEN AND HOW?

Hong Kong is a fabulous city because despite being a leading financial centre it retains some of its local traditions and flavour. You can walk out of a gleaming skyscraper straight into an old wet market and eat in a dai pai dong. It’s this contrast that makes it endlessly fascinating for tourists and budding photographers alike.
