In The Know with Peggy Chan

FILL US IN ON YOUR BACKGROUND, WHO YOU ARE, WHAT YOU DO?

I am the Founder, Executive Chef and Managing Director of Grassroots Pantry and Prune Organic Deli & Workshop, a restaurant, cafe and workshop space through which I’m able to share my passion for organic, plant-based food with the community; support local sustainable agriculture, food-related NGOs, and help to educate the public about the issues that face our food systems today.

WHERE DO YOU GO FOR YOUR CHEAP EATS, COMFORT FOOD?

Veggie dumplings at Wang Fu, Posto Pubblico for the best arrabiata in town.

HOW ABOUT FOR A NICE DINNER AND A NIGHT OUT?

Cafe Gray at The Upper House.

ON WEEKENDS, WHERE DO YOU GO TO LEAVE BEHIND THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE OF THE CITY?

I have no weekends! But when I do get a day off, Sai Kung for a hike out to Ham Tin Wan. If I’m able to sneak in 4-5 days of R&R, Como Shambala Estate in Bali.

WHERE DO YOU SHOP? ANY SECRET FINDS THAT YOU CAN LET OUR GUESTS IN ON?

Mushroom on Aberdeen Street is one of the cutest stores in town. Shambala in Wong Chuk Hang for wooden and antique furnitures. I do most of my clothing shopping online – One Teaspoon and Jenny Bird jewelry are one of my favourites.

Frankly I rarely do my own shopping and prefer spending money on travel and relaxation.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR ENTERTAINMENT? ANY GREAT ART, MUSIC, THEATRE OR CINEMA VENUES YOU WOULD RECOMMEND?

Walking the morning trail, yoga in between, watching a foreign film in the early AM solo at Broadway, spa sessions at the Landmark Mandarin, book browsing and cafe-ing at Coffee Academics in Repulse Bay.

WHAT’S THE BEST SOUVENIR TO BRING BACK FROM HONG KONG?

Dried lizard on a stick from Des Voeux West. Just because.

ACT LOCAL – WHERE, WHEN AND HOW?

Sham Shui Po for fabric, knick knacks and random shop browsing by MTR on a hot summers day. Cool down with an iced milk “yeen yeung” tea and snack on HK cha chaan teng’s famous peanut butter filled french toast.
